Gardenias (Gardenia jasminoides) have long been the gold standard for fragrant shrubs. Their glossy evergreen foliage and creamy white blooms have made them a favorite for generations, filling gardens, especially those in the South, with a perfume that's difficult to rival. But for many gardeners, they're also one of the most frustrating shrubs to grow.
Cold winters, alkaline soils, inconsistent moisture, and poor drainage can leave gardenias struggling with yellow leaves, dropped flower buds or worse. Unless you garden in the right climate and can provide the absolute right conditions they demand, you end up chasing success that is just not guaranteed.
