This Country star wouldn't leave hospital with baby as she 'wasn't in love with husband'

Daisy May Cooper has recalled not wanting to leave hospital after having her second child, admitting that she "felt dread" about returning to her marriage at the time.

The actor and writer, 36, separated from her husband Will Weston last year, after having welcomed children Pip, four, and Jack, almost two, during their long-term relationship.

The end of her marriage inspired Daisy - who is best known for writing and starring in mockumentary sitcom This Country - to create new show Am I Being Unreasonable?

Asked about how the BBC series came about, she said it was because she was "desperately unhappy" in her marriage but didn't realise until lockdown put a "massive spotlight on it".

She told the Radio Times: "I had my son in lockdown. It was a mess. [The hospital] weren't allowing the husbands to come in. And that's when I knew I couldn't go back to him."

"Because I was actually loving it with all the nurses and all the women. I felt dread at bringing the baby back home. Isn't that terrible?," the BAFTA winner added.

Daisy commented that whilst her ex-husband is a "lovely man," she "just wasn't in love with him," with her adding that she believes he felt similarly about her.

She recalled her daughter Pip asking her to put a pair of dungarees on a Sylvanian Family squirrel - which she described as "like the straw that broke the camel's back".

Daisy said that writing her new show has been "therapy," with co-writer and co-star Selin Hizli, 33, having gone through the end of her relationship around the same time.

The pair have been friends since meeting at drama school RADA in 2007, though had lost touch before reuniting a few days after Daisy moved out of her marital home.

Selin - who shares eight-year-old twins with her now ex-partner - said of her own experience: "As Daisy says, you don't realise you’re unhappy until [lockdown] magnifies it."

The plot of their comedy thriller series centres around mother-of-one Nic (played by Daisy) who is bored of her marriage and grieving the loss of a past relationship.

Whilst on the school run she bumps into Jen (played by Selin), who has just moved into the area, and the two form an alliance - with Daisy teasing that they are "both damaged".

The latest issue of Radio Times magazine is on sale now.

Am I Being Unreasonable? continues with its second episode on Friday (October 1) at 9.30pm on BBC One. The six-part series is available in its entirety now on BBC iPlayer.
