San Diego is getting a huge backer for its arena project.
The Kroenke Group, owned by Stan Kroenke, will be partnering in the redevelopment of the nearly 50-acre site that will have San Diego’s Midway Rising project. The project includes a 16,000-seat arena and over 4,000 new housing units along with other commercial and community establishments.

Kroenke is the owner of several sports teams, including recent champions like the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, NFL’s Los Angeles Rams and NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. He also owns Arsenal FC of the English Premier League and the MLS’ Colorado Rapids.
His group recently built the over $5 billion SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, just a few hundred miles north of the San Diego arena site, which houses the Rams and NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers.
San Diego has been reportedly interested in more professional sports teams despite losing the Chargers to Los Angeles in 2020. The city currently has the MLB’s Padres and NWSL’s San Diego Wave, and are expected to be a top candidate for the next MLS expansion.
