This baby could push India past China to become the world's most populous country

MUMBAI, India — In a sparse, one-room apartment on the far periphery of a booming megacity, the piercing cry of a newborn baby marks a population milestone for India.

He's a boy named Vehant, born on Nov. 9 and weighing nearly 8 pounds. His first days were difficult; he developed a blood infection and was hospitalized for 10 days. Now he's back home.

Vehant Singh, the son of 24-year-old Naina Agrahari and 27-year-old Sumit Chauhan, was born in Mumbai on Nov. 9. The photo was taken when he was 1 month old. He is part of a wave of newborns who will lift India's population past China. And he is part of a new generation in India with far more opportunities than past generations. (Lauren Frayer/NPR)
