One game that tried to harness this fact but fell a bit flat was The Guild 2. Most of us could hardly play it, given a serious RAM leak issue that caused it to crash after playing for a while. On some systems, it barely lasted 15 minutes. On the beefiest of systems, you could play for hours, but that crash was always inevitable.
