This 200-year-old manor house is now a luxury agriturismo in peaceful Menorca

This 33-room luxury agriturismo is housed in a handsome Palladian-style manor and boasts a courtyard restaurant, two swimming pools and vast gardens

Location

Set within 180 hectares of farmland in southwest Menorca, with ambling horses, donkeys, and cows all around, the estate is a 20-minute drive from the island’s second city, Ciutadella, with its castle, Moorish cathedral, and buzzy port lined with good restaurants. The diminutive Cala Son Vell cove is an eight-minute cycle (or 20-minute walk) from the property, offering access to the 186km Camí de Cavalls, a trail that encircles the island and connects guests to nearby beaches, such as pine-backed Son Saura with its calm, translucent waters.

A car is essential for getting to and from the airport (a 55-minute drive), though the hotel is able to provide transfers at an additional cost.

The vibe

Vestige, a Spanish family-run company, owns the hotel. A honey-hued 18th-century stone manor sits at the heart of the estate, flanked by gardens of palms, banana plants, olive trees, lush lawns and an organic vegetable garden, and beyond that, farmland.

Inside the main house, custom-built furniture and soft furnishings in naturally dyed fabrics (linen, jute, silk and cotton) decorate the public spaces. Lime plaster walls and terracotta stone floors lend warmth. Outside, the restaurant sits in a courtyard, with metal tables and chairs made comfortable with wide, plush cushions.

The hotel has several clever eco-friendly initiatives, such as geothermal wells that provide all the energy needed for cooling and heating water, lighting systems that help reduce light pollution and energy use, and solar panels. The hotel uses collected rainwater to water the garden and the estate is 60 per cent self-sufficient.

Service

Friendly and invested. On arrival, a chatty member of staff met us, collected our luggage in a golf buggy, and ferried us to our room. The guest services team set up a direct messaging service, making us feel as though we had our own private butler (all suites have 24-hour access to this service). Meal times could be changed, ice buckets requested, and advice sought, all with a few taps of a finger.

There were times when an order took a while to arrive (dining tended to be a slow and steady affair), but generally staff were kind and attentive without being overbearing.

Bed and bath

There are generous one and two-bedroom suites in the main house, some with terraces. These rooms with pale blue shutters lean towards a luxe chateau vibe, with chandeliers, large stone or marble fireplaces, restored beams, and large bathrooms with standalone baths (some with separate showers), plus terracotta floors. The garden suites offer a more pared-back feel, with a creamy colour palette, limestone, wood and natural fabrics. These have large terraces. Note that some of the garden suites do not have baths.

All-natural Rowse toiletries are found in the bathrooms, along with hairdryers, robes, slippers and loofahs.

Food and drink

The hotel is classed as an agrotourism hotel, and as such, food is local (sourced from the kitchen garden on the estate or from local farms), seasonal and very good. Sa Clarissa serves breakfast and lunch and Vermell serves dinner. A considered selection of local and international meats and cheeses, plus fruit, natural yoghurt, cereals, cakes, breads and pastries is available from the buffet, while a considerable hot menu (sobrasada with honey on toast was a standout) includes some favourites such as eggs benedict, avocado on toast, pancakes or pretty much whatever you want to order.

There is an a la carte lunch and evening menu that highlights the best local produce – think suckling pig served with an apple jus or catch of the day. A short and long tasting menu is available too.

If you’d rather not move from your sunlounger, the Pool Bar serves a concise list, including an exceptional club sandwich made with guanciale and chicken in a focaccia, a burger, fish ceviche and salads.

Facilities

There are two swimming pools – one lap pool overlooking farmland, one set within lush gardens with a green lawn. The hotel offers a number of (chargeable) experiences, such as horseriding, boat charters on its own vessel, an art tour of Cuitadella, four-wheel drive adventures, and stand-up paddleboarding.

There are also a number of free activities hosted on certain days, including weekly outdoor cinema screenings and live music and yoga classes. Adult bikes are available to borrow. A gym with Technogym equipment and treatment rooms is located close to the second pool.

Accessibility

One bedroom is fully adapted for disabled guests, located close to communal areas of the hotel. A lift within the main house gives access to the upstairs bedrooms. There are four adapted toilets in communal areas and ramps can be provided.

Pet policy

Pets are not allowed.

Check-in/check-out

Check in at 3pm, check out at 12pm.

Family-friendly

Cots, high chairs and baby seats for the bikes are available on request. There is a varied children’s menu (my daughter loved the catch of the day served with broccoli and mashed potatoes so much, she ordered it every evening). The garden pool has a shallow area that’s perfect for toddlers to splash around in, and the lawns make it easy for crawling babies to explore comfortably.
