Third Liverpool takeaway slapped with poor hygiene rating in matter of weeks

A third Liverpool business has been handed the worst possible food hygiene rating in a matter of weeks.

Pizza Central on Warbreck Moor has been told urgent improvement is necessary after an inspection by Liverpool Council. It is the latest in a string of poor ratings for venues across the city after Koko Burger in Anfield and The Spice Brasserie in Garston were slapped with zero ratings by the Food Standards Agency.

Things weren’t much better for Baris Kebab House on Rice Lane, which has been handed a one out of five rating by inspectors. The information made available by the Food Standards Agency said in terms of management of food safety at Pizza Central, “urgent improvement” was necessary regarding system of checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future.

Inspectors said “major improvement” was required around hygienic food handling, as well as cleanliness and condition of facilities and building. On its website, Pizza Central said it is “a popular pizza takeaway in Liverpool and is gaining popularity day-by-day since its inauguration on the basis of our hard work in selecting the best quality ingredients for our dishes.

“We tried our best to provide the tasty and flavourful dishes to the people living in and around Liverpool to win their hearts.” It describes its offering as “high quality”.

In 2016, Pizza Central secured a rating of four out of five before fluctuating between one and three up until its last inspection in December 2020. Inspectors said Baris Kebab House had a good approach to cleanliness, including having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control” to enable good food hygiene.

However, major improvement is necessary around its management of food safety. On hygienic food handling, the Rice Lane site, which claims to have “freshly made, best quality” items, improvement is required according to the Food Standards Agency.

The one out of five rating is no change from its last inspection in 2020. The venue had a rating of three out of five as recently as 2017 before dropping to two in 2019.

The ECHO approached Pizza Central and Baris Kebab House for comment.
