Tragedy struck in Baltimore as crews recovered the body of a third construction worker who lost his life in the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The victim, identified as Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval, was found on Friday morning amidst salvage efforts to clear tons of steel debris hindering search and rescue operations.
The Keybridge Joint Information Center confirmed that salvage dive teams located the 38-year-old worker and promptly informed Maryland State Police. A specialized underwater recovery team, supported by law enforcement agencies, successfully retrieved Suazo Sandoval's body.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed condolences, stating, 'Maryland is praying for the family of Maynor Yasir Suazo Sandoval and all of his loved ones. They have our thoughts, our hearts, and our support.' He acknowledged the challenging and vital nature of the workers' tasks, emphasizing their contributions to the state's infrastructure.
Maynor Suazo Sandoval, who hailed from Honduras and had been living in the US for 18 years, leaves behind a wife and two children – an 18-year-old son and a 5-year-old daughter. Described by his brother as a kind and visionary individual, Suazo Sandoval was one of six workers who tragically perished in the bridge collapse while repairing potholes.
The incident occurred when a large container ship collided with the bridge, causing a section to crumble into the Patapsco River. The recovery of Suazo Sandoval's body marks a somber milestone in the ongoing efforts to locate and retrieve all victims of this devastating event.
