Things to do across Derry and Strabane in March

Many people will be looking forward to the arrival of March.

With longer evenings and the arrival of Spring, the month is a turning point in which winter blues can be left behind.

With St. Patrick's Day and preparations for Easter well underway, there are also many other events taking place across Derry for people to enjoy.

While Derry and Strabane District Council have a full list of exiting events happening, here are some to keep an eye on:

  • Peace Heroines Exhibition ~ Tower Museum

The Peace Heroines of Northern Ireland exhibition explores the collaboration of local women working across borders, political and religious divides.

The exhibition will tell the story of both individual peace heroines and collectives, such as the Derry Peace Women, the Women's Coalition and the special dynamic between the Shankill Women's Centre and the Falls Road Women's Centre.

The exhibition will run in Derry's Tower Museum until March 24.

  • Ulster Orchestra On Your Doorstep At The Alley

The Ulster Orchestra is delighted to return to The Alley for an eclectic evening of music, from Mozart to Jessie Montgomery, and features the Orchestra's own Principal Trumpet Tom Fountain as soloist for Haydn's Trumpet Concerto.

This concert will take place in the Alley Theatre, Strabane, on Thursday March 2 at 7.30pm.

  • A Celebration of Father Ted with Joe Rooney

Joe featured as the rebellious Father Damo in the classic Father Ted episode The Old Grey Whistle Theft, leading Dougal astray with his earring, cigarette smoking and bad-boy attitude.

This evening, perfect for Father Ted fans, will take place in Derry's Waterside Theatre on Saturday March 4 at 8pm.

  • Irish language weekend course

Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin is hosting a two day weekend Irish language course. Perfect for both Beginners and Advanced, with all levels and abilities welcome.

The course will take place on Saturday March 11 and Sunday March 12 from 10am until 4pm.

  • St Patrick's Day Spring Carnival

Celebrate the arrival of Spring in all its colourful splendour with a magical programme of music, dance, food and folklore this St Patrick's Day.

Don’t miss the ‘Recycle & Renewal’ Spring Carnival Parade through the streets of Derry and a special 24hour Buskathon in aid of the mayor’s charity.

  • St Patrick's Day Carnival Parade

Famed for their fantastical and flamboyant carnival parades, the NWCI has stepped into Spring for this year’s Carnival parade in celebration of ‘Recycle & Renewal’.

Communities will come together in a parade which will use the elements of nature; Fire, Air, Earth, Water to highlight the significance of recycling and reusing, reducing waste and the positive impact this can have on our environment for future generations.

The parade will depart Bishop Street at 3pm.

  • Mayor's 24 Hour Buskathon

Local performers will take to the mike on the Guildhall steps over St Patrick's weekend as part of a special 24 hour buskathon to raise awareness and funds for homelessness.

The buskathon takes place from 6pm on St Patrick’s Day to 6pm on Saturday March 18 in collaboration with The Nerve Centre.

  • Spring Cinema | Lyra + Q&A

Directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Alison Millar, Lyra is a beautiful and heartfelt film about the life and death of the internationally renowned Northern Irish investigative journalist Lyra McKee and will be followed by a discussion with Sara Canning, Lyra’s partner.

The screening will take place in the Nerve Centre on March 23 at 7pm.
