Things to clean in June – 7 key spots to tackle for summer

June is the best time of year to open the windows and doors and let fresh air and bright sunlight flood our home. However, all this natural light shows up a lot of dust and dirt that may have been missed during spring – not to mention it is prime time for pollen to infiltrate our homes.

Even if we have just finished our spring cleaning efforts, there is always work to be done to keep our homes in top shape month after month, with June offering the perfect conditions to deal with some of the lesser-done tasks, such as shampooing carpets or cleaning window screens.

To stay on top of the mess and prevent allergies from ruining your summer, professional cleaners recommend always cleaning these seven things in June.

Things to clean in June

You don’t need any fancy cleaning tips to tackle these simple spots around your home, experts assure. These seven spaces are all super quick to clean, and have a lasting impact on your home throughout summer.

1. Air filters and window screens

We usually associate efforts to cut energy bills with the winter months. But there are plenty of things to do in summer to keep costs low – including maintaining your AC unit and keeping pollen out of your home, begins Andriy Neborak, Founder & CEO of Luxury Cleaning NY:

‘In June, with our windows open more, it is important to keep your air filtration system running at peak levels. Dirty air filters can harbor allergens such as pollen, mold, and dust. If your filter is clogged, it increases the risk of introducing these allergens into your house, which can exacerbate allergies or asthma and increase running costs.

‘According to a study published in the Journal of Indoor Environment, switching out air filters can decrease allergy symptoms by up to 40%. Cleaning window screens will also improve flow and remove unwanted pollen or debris that may have accumulated over the winter.’

2. Closets and seasonal storage

If you are in the process of decluttering in June, then it is the perfect time to clean your closet and other seasonal storage spots around your home, adds Yessica Bello, cleaning expert with Bello’s Cleaning.

‘This reduces accumulated dust and allows for better ventilation, preventing mold and mildew growth in humid summer months. Organizing in June also frees up space for summer essentials, making daily routines more efficient.’

3. High-traffic floors

‘Summer brings more foot traffic, especially if you host gatherings.’ points out Austin Jones, cleaning expert and CEO of Millennium Facility Services. ‘That’s why I always ensure floors, particularly in kitchens, living rooms, and hallways, are thoroughly cleaned.’

Austin recommends making the most of the warm weather to deep clean carpets and dry them quickly, for instance, to remove accumulated dirt and prevent musty odors to make a home smell nice for summer.

4. Patios and outdoor furniture

If you are anything like us, then you will be spending a lot of time outdoors this summer soaking up the sun with friends and family. Before peak hosting season hits, make sure to tackle all your outdoor cleaning tasks, such as cleaning your patio and any hosting equipment and furniture before guests arrive, cleaning expert Austin Jones continues:

‘Outdoor entertaining spaces need extra attention. Clean patios, decks, and outdoor furniture to remove dirt, pollen, and grime. Focus on grilling areas and cleaning outdoor kitchens as well, ensuring they're free from build up that can affect food safety and flavor.’

5. Windows

If you didn’t get around to it during your spring cleaning, June is the perfect time to clean windows without streaks to help sunlight flood your home, suggests Yessica Bello, cleaning expert.

‘Removing winter grime from windows and screens not only improves visibility but also helps in maintaining indoor air quality by keeping out dust and allergens,’ she explains. ‘It's a task that brightens the home and makes it feel more open and inviting, perfect for the upcoming summer gatherings.’

Don’t forget to also clean window tracks for a truly clean home.

6. Gutters

We might associate cleaning gutters with our fall home maintenance tasks, but late spring is one of the best times to clean gutters, cleaning experts claim. The weather is perfect for working to heights, with little to no wind and little rain making things slippery, says Lina DaSilva, professional cleaner and owner of Toronto Shine Cleaning.

‘Cleaning them out prevents blockages from spring debris and reduces the risk of water damage during summer storms,’ she adds.

7. AC and ceiling fans

Cleaning an air conditioner is probably the least fun cleaning task, but it is a must before summer if you want to avoid breakdowns on the hottest days of the year, warns Rhonda Wilson, quality lead cleaner at FreshSpace Cleaning.

‘If you clean and change the filters, your AC will work much better and keep your place cooler when it's scorching outside. A clean unit uses less power and cleaner air means fewer sneezes and sniffles for everyone, which is always a good thing.’

The same goes for cleaning ceiling fans, she adds. ‘Dusty fans can get noisy and wobbly which is unsafe and quite irritating. When it’s hot out, a clean fan can help spread the cool air around, so you don’t have to crank the AC as much. If you have allergies, keeping those blades clean can make a big difference.’

FAQs

What is ‘Summer Cleaning’?

Summer cleaning is the time to stay on top of all the tasks you completed during your spring cleaning. With most areas in your home reset back to square one with little dust or dirt, it is important to start a good cleaning schedule to stay on top of them so that they do not become overwhelming again and your hard work is not undone.

Can I spring clean in June?

Although spring cleaning is usually tackled at the start of spring, in late April and early May, it can still be done throughout June if breaking up tasks is easier for you. Try to get the bulk of the heavy work done before the weather gets too hot, however, to make it easier on your body.

Cleaning these seven things in June might sound like a drag, but staying on top of the work will make your summer easier to manage and far more fun. Try working these quarterly tasks into your regular cleaning and weekly organizing schedule so they do not feel like too much extra work, spreading the tasks over a few days or weeks to make them less overwhelming.
