Thierry Henry and Micah Richards left in stitches at Jamie Carragher's expense

Micah Richards and Thierry Henry struggled to contain their laughter as they reminded Jamie Carragher about the last time Liverpool played Benfica in the Champions League prior to their meeting this season.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds have progressed to the last four of the competition having toppled their Portuguese counterparts, but Benfica did not go down without a fight and eventually went out on a 6-4 aggregate defeat. The two-legged last eight tie marked the first time the teams have faced off in the knockout rounds since the 2005/06 campaign.

Things fared rather differently back then, as it was actually Liverpool who were eliminated having lost 3-0 on aggregate over the course of the two games. The second leg was played at Anfield, yet the Reds still stumbled to a 2-0 defeat.

Carragher was in the line-up for the hosts that night and Richards saw fit to read an extract from a match-report that hardly covered his colleague in glory. Covering the Champions League on CBS Sports, the ex-Man City man read: "The Merseysiders had early chances to overturn their 1-0 first-leg deficit, with Peter Crouch, Jamie Carragher and Luis Garcia the most guilty.

"They were made to pay when Carragher dithered and ex-Reds target Sabrosa...from the corner Garcia's volley was cleared off the line and Carragher produced a defender's finish in firing the rebound into the side-netting from a few yards out. It proved to the the third time unlucky when Carragher failed to clear and it eventually fell to Simao who faked to shoot before unleashing an unstoppable drive into the top corner."

The report went on and on, further dissecting what was clearly a lacklustre display from Carragher. Richards went one further and even sourced footage from the game 16 years ago to really ram home just how off the pace his fellow pundit was.

The moment did not pass without the ex-Anfield hero having his right to reply having been forced to watch one of his worst displays in a Red shirt. Carragher held his hands up and explained: "I can only apologise, you can't get to the Champions League final every year.

"We got there the year before and we got there the year after - you've got to have a year off in the middle," he added sarcastically. Carragher is not wrong, the defeat in question came at a surprising time considering how strong Liverpool were in Europe during that period.

Over a decade and a half later and Liverpool remain a European giant with the Reds still in the running for what would be a remarkable quadruple. Klopp's troops will face Villarreal in the semi-final before potentially meeting one of Man City or Real Madrid in the final.
