Thick smoke fills gardens as grass fire spreads near homes

Thick smoke is filling gardens as a large grass fire spreads near homes.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) were first called to the Grange Hill area of West Kirby in Wirral, at 5.27pm on Tuesday, August 9, following reports of smoke in the area. Once three fire engines arrived at the scene they found a 200mx50m section of grass well alight.

Firefighters also spotted another area of grass on fire, closer to Leigh Road, and requested backup at around 5.29pm. Another fire engine arrived at the scene shortly after and found another 100mx100m square of grass alight.

Crews started using main jet and high-pressure hoses to get the fire under control. At around 5.45pm firefighters requested more backup as the fire spread to grass near Grange Old Road.

After another fire engine arrived crews started using four high pressure reels to get the flames under control. A spokesperson from MFRS told The ECHO nobody else is believed to be in the area, other than fire crews, and the ambulance service and police are not in attendance.

Video footage captured on a mobile phone shows smoke filling gardens near the fire. Firefighters remain at the scene.
