'They're family': Japan quake survivors shelter in hospital with pets

When a powerful earthquake hit Japan’s Kumamoto on July 28, Tomoko Takaoka's Chihuahua “Ku” and Chihuahua-poodle mix “Sheri” desperately needed a temporary home. Takaoka could find no evacuation centers that accepted evacuees with pets. Eventually, social media led her to an animal hospital in downtown Kumamoto that allows evacuees and their pets to take refuge. - REUTERS
