‘They’ve broken his legs!’: Woman takes pet rabbit to vet for routine dental work, but what they do instead is unforgivable

A heartbroken woman on TikTok has shared the horrific mistreatment her pet rabbit went through after she took it to the vets for a routine appointment and it came back with broken legs.

The upsetting video was posted by Clement Rabbit Rescue and shows a distressed woman by the name of Paige holding a very traumatized looking rabbit as she cries, “They’ve broken his legs!” It seems the poor rabbit was the victim of negligence on the vets’ part. The little critter appears to be holding at least one of it’s legs up which certainly indicates that something is wrong.

Due to work commitments, I was unable to travel to my usual vets with Jack for a routine appointment. This vet assured he was comfortable seeing Jack and experienced with rabbits. Jack was taken out the back for a conscious incisor burr, something he’s had 30+ times and was returned to me 5 minutes later with a broken leg. I then drove him 60 miles to my exotic vets where it was confirmed his leg was broken as I suspected. As many of you know, Jack does not cope well with anaesthetic and has previously crashed twice, which is why he normally has conscious burrs instead of full dental extractions. Because of this, I was faced with putting him to sleep or attempting to amputate his leg. I left him there with every fibre in my body telling me he wasn’t coming home. Despite Jack’s heart rate dropping and proving to be another difficult GA, they managed to get Jack through. I am unable to go into anymore detail right now, as the events of what’s happened are being formally raised through the appropriate channels, but I wanted to let you all know what has happened as so many of you care about Jack🤍 #animalrescue #foryoupage❤❤ #animals #animalsoftiktok #rabbitsoftiktok

Of course, one can only wonder how a routine vet procedure went so terribly wrong that it ended with the rabbit leaving with a broken leg.

What happened?

The caption of the video gives us a little more context explaining that the rabbit, whose name is Jack, had been booked in for a routine incisor burr, essentially filing down the rabbit’s teeth. This was something that Paige had done with Jack had done many times, however, on this occasion she wasn’t able to bring him to her usual vets.

The new vet assured her that they would be able to handle Jack but when his owner returned to pick him up something was wrong. In a later video Paige would explain that the vets didn’t tell her about Jack’s leg, they simply claimed that he went “floppy.” They let her find out on her own. The worrying part was that such an injury could mean life or death for an animal as small as Jack.

What happened to Jack?

Paige explained that she was left with only two options, amputate the leg or put Jack to sleep. The issue was that Jack doesn’t cope well with anesthetic, the last time the poor rabbit was put under his heart stopped twice. This meant the two options were essentially certain death, or slightly less certain death.

She rushed him to another vets and went ahead with the amputation, “I left him there with every fibre in my body telling me he wasn’t coming home,” Paige explained in the caption. Miraculously, Jack pulled through, minus one leg of course, and the people of TikTok were thrilled to hear it, “He is one little fighter,” one comment reads.

In an update video we see Jack doing much better despite missing one of his back legs. Paige states that she is unable to give more details on the matter as she is going through the “appropriate channels,” but she is presumably taking some form of action against the vets for their carelessness with Jack.
