To say that Walter Smith was only at Old Trafford from March 2004 until December 2004, his impact at the club is unquestionable - and his role in helping Manchester United sign Wayne Rooney from Everton was, according to many people, instrumental.
When Smith died last year, the tributes poured in for the Scotsman. He was loved by all who knew him in the football world, and his outlook on the game was positive, forward-thinking and exciting. Despite enjoying a spell as Everton manager, he is best known for winning 21 trophies across two spells as manager of Rangers.
It was somewhat of a shame, then, that he wasn't part of the United set-up for longer. Who knows what impact his presence around the place could have had, but he was highly thought of by everyone at the club and, in many ways, he helped more than anyone ever expected him to.
