'They'll be watching you like a hawk': Warning as pop-up beer garden gets green light

Plans for a pop-up beer garden at an old mill this summer have been given the green light – but the brewers behind it have received some words of warning. Manchester brewers ShinDigger had their Secret Garden plans, which are set to take place at Talbot Mill in Ellesmere Street, knocked back by council staff.

Licensing officers raised concerns about noise, public nuisance and health and safety at the events which are planned for every weekend in July and August. The events, organised in collaboration with property developer Capital and Centric which has plans to convert the mill into around 200 apartments, were scaled back by cutting capacity and opening hours – but officers still objected.

Councillors on the licensing panel gave the go ahead after a town hall hearing on Monday (May 16) – but the brewers were warned their speakers could be seized if the events cause a nuisance and a noise abatement notice is served. Announcing the outcome at the hearing, licensing chair Paul Andrews said: "They're going to be watching you like a hawk so you need to be aware of that."
