These Recalled Bed Rails May Still Be in Homes After Two Reported Deaths

Thousands of recalled portable adult bed rails may still be in homes across the country. Families and caregivers should check model numbers and stop using affected products immediately if they’re part of the CPSC recall. Akkalak Aiempradit/Shutterstock

When we care for aging family members, our primary goal is to ensure they are safe and comfortable in their own homes. Unfortunately, a widely used mobility aid has recently become the subject of urgent safety warnings from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Multiple portable adult bed rails have been recalled in recent years because of deadly entrapment hazards, and one of the largest recalls (announced in late March) remains especially important because many of the affected products may still be in homes today.

Because the products were sold nationwide for years through Amazon, Walmart, medical supply retailers, and other online sellers, families should not assume they’re unaffected simply because they purchased the rail months (or even years) ago. Here’s what you need to know about how to identify the products so that you can stay safe.
