With just three months left in 2024, the top five performing Dow Jones stocks this year are Walmart, American Express, IBM, Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs.
Walmart stock leads the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2024, advancing nearly 52% so far on the year as of Sept. 27. American Express stock has gained 44.7%, IBM has surged 35%. Caterpillar stock has added 32.3% with Goldman Sachs stock rounding out the top five with a 29.2% year-to-day gain.
Dow Leaders Have Strong Q3
During the third quarter, IBM rallied 28%, leading the top year-to-date Dow Jones performers. Walmart stock has added 18% with American Express and Caterpillar stock both gaining 17%. Goldman Sachs has jumped slightly more than 10% during the third quarter.

Going into Monday's market action, Caterpillar has rallied 9.8% in September and IBM stock has added 9.3%. AXP is up 4.8% on the month while WMT has angled up 3.3%.
Goldman Sachs has declined more than 2% in September.
Dow Jones: Top Performers Near Buy Points; Earnings
Walmart, AmEx, IBM and Caterpillar are all extended above official entries. However, Goldman Sachs stock closed on Friday at 498.51 and is currently around 4% below an official 517.26 buy point, according to MarketSurge. Goldman could have an early entry at 506.41.
Four of the big five Dow performers have third-quarter earnings due in October.
Goldman Sachs reports Q3 earnings on Oct. 15 with American Express Q3 earnings coming on Oct. 18. IBM third-quarter financials are scheduled for Oct. 23. Caterpillar earnings are expected to be on or around Oct. 24.
Meanwhile, Walmart's fiscal 2025 third-quarter earnings are due Nov. 19.
Analysts project earnings growth for Goldman Sachs, Walmart and IBM with slight declines for Caterpillar and American Express.
