Former Prime Minister Theresa May could be brought back for a caretaker role if Boris Johnson does step down, a Conservative source has reportedly said. Around 50 people had already quit Mr Johnbson's Government by Thursday morning in a protest over honesty and integrity.
Close to 100 are believed to have turned their back on the Prime Minister after he was forced to apologise for appointing Chris Pincher. Johnson admitted "it was a mistake" to appoint him as deputy chief whip after it emerged he had forgotten about being told of previous allegations of "inappropriate" behaviour.
Now Ms May has been described as “uniquely placed” to stand in if the prime minister does resign or is ousted in a break from convention, a well-placed source told the Daily Mail.
She was the prime minister before being replaced by Mr Johnson in 2019.
"She knows the ropes and the security stuff, she’s a party woman through and through, she’s definitely not interested in standing for it herself and would be credible," the source said.
"She is uniquely placed."
The appointment of a new PM could take months as it would involve leadership elections within the Conservative Party taking multiple rounds and campaigns. Ms May could stand in as Prime Minister during that time, if The Queen agrees and asks her to form a Government.
An alternative would be for Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab to step up.
Another Conservative MP also saw how it would be perfect revenge for Ms May saying it would have an ‘element of epic schadenfreude to it, given he knifed her in the first place’.
