Even though the announcement of Flying Colors’ debut album coming a year after Mike Portnoy had left Dream Theater, the 2012 release had been planned before the drummer’s career had taken an unexpected twist. 

“It’s really hard to put my finger on it musically,” Portnoy told Prog of the music he’d made alongside Neal Morse, Steve Morse, Dave LaRue and Casey McPherson. “Every song has a very different style to it and it’s something that’s unlike Neal, Steve, Dave or myself have ever done. It’s more song-oriented, alternative pop with a progressive edge.
