"There were loads of bands happy to make mediocre records. We never saw this as an option." The story of At The Gates' Slaughter Of The Soul - the album that revolutionised death metal

Earlier today, Tuesday September 16, 2025, it was confirmed that At The Gates frontman Tomas Lindberg had died aged 52 following a battle with cancer. At The Gates’ legendary fourth album, Slaughter Of The Soul, was released on November 14, 1995, and became widely regarded as one of the most influential death metal albums of all time.

It helped to establish the ‘Gothenburg Sound’ and inspired everyone from melodeath heavyweights like Children Of Bodom and The Black Dahlia Murder to 2000s metalcore mainstays like Trivium and Killswitch Engage. In 2006, Lindberg looked back on one of 90s metal's landmark records. While At The Gates would reform a year after this interview and eventually release three more critically acclaimed albums, few could doubt that Slaughter Of The Soul would remain the band's definitive statement and one of the most important albums of its generation.
