Australia's highest office holder has described the attacks female leaders face as "unique and pernicious" in the wake of an alleged attack that left a federal MP fighting for her life.
Independent member for Indi Helen Haines, 65, lost both her legs after allegedly being rammed by a four-wheel drive outside her electoral office in Wangaratta, northern Victoria, on Monday.
Dr Haines' husband, Phil Haines, confirmed his wife was critical but stable in a press conference on Wednesday alongside Governor-General Sam Mostyn, who has joined the chorus of pleas for Australians to dial down the temperature in political debate, particularly against women.
