The Witcher 3 Songs of the Past was supposed to be revealed tomorrow, CDPR says, but "let's say we found something we didn't yet expect on RED Launcher"

In The Witcher 3, Geralt and Ciri sit together beneath a tree and converse.

We were collectively blindsided this morning when CD Projekt Red decided to announce brand new DLC for The Witcher 3. The long-rumored Songs of the Past will arrive next year, but we weren't meant to hear about it quite so soon, as the studio's now admitted to.

On Twitter, in response to the posts revealing Songs of the Past, CD Projekt says this new chapter of The Witcher 3 was planned to be unveiled tomorrow instead. "We originally planned to make this big reveal during our REDstreams tomorrow," the studio posted. "But let's say we found something we didn't yet expect on RED Launcher."

Translation: the devs accidentally leaked it themselves. Whatever went on, this news was on the Red Launcher slightly ahead of schedule. Of course, CD Projekt could've ignored the leak and just waited until tomorrow. But unfortunately, the moment's gone now, because we all knew it was happening.

This is another collaboration with Fool's Theory, who're co-developing Songs of the Past with CD Projekt. Fool's Theory is no stranger to Geralt of Rivia at the moment, because it's also working on the remake of The Witcher that's been in development for a number of years now.

Moreover, members of Fool's Theory actually worked on and helped ship The Witcher 3, making it a strong fit for this DLC even before the current partnership. Not much else is known as of now, other than the expansion is being made for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S only.

We'll likely hear more tomorrow, during the REDStreams, where the news itself would've been the centrepiece. Hey, maybe there's a trailer we can watch - only one way to find out.

The Witcher 3 lead quest designer says the room fell into "wide eyes and silence" when he pitched one of the open-world RPG's biggest twists
