'The Witcher 3' Remastered to Run Fine on Steam Deck, Says CD Projekt Red—When to Expect it?

Fans of "The Witcher 3" have had plenty of reasons to worry about how a graphical remaster might affect performance on handheld hardware, especially given CD Projekt Red's rocky history with optimization.

According to the studio's own team, though, Steam Deck owners have nothing to fear once the update arrives.

'The Witcher 3' Remastered to Run Just Fine on Steam Deck

Speaking to PC Gamer ahead of Gamescom 2026, CD Projekt Red's executive producer of external projects, Jakub Kutrzuba, addressed concerns directly about how "The Witcher 3" Remastered will perform on Valve's handheld.

He explained, "When it comes to Steam Deck, based on what we see, the game will work the same way, but look much much better. Because from one side we are bringing all these improvements, we are bringing new content, we are upgrading the assets, but we also have the new rendering features."

That reassurance matters given how much anxiety typically surrounds older games receiving a remaster treatment, especially one being delivered as a free update rather than a separate paid release.

Since "The Witcher 3" is already 11 years old, players understandably worried a glossy new graphics pack might strain Steam Deck's hardware in ways the original release never did. The remastered experience will help refresh the game despite being more than a decade old, making it enjoyable for both old and new gamers.

CD Projekt Red's 'The Witcher 3' Remastered

"The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt" originally earned Steam Deck Verified status back in March 2022, following extensive optimization work after the handheld's initial October 2021 launch. That verification confirmed the RPG ran seamlessly on Valve's hardware without dropped frames, fiddly controls, or other technical hiccups compared to playing on a standard PC.

According to Kutrzuba, the upcoming Remastered version builds directly on top of that already solid foundation, layering in a new rendering engine, upgraded assets, and additional content without sacrificing the performance players have come to expect on Steam Deck.

CD Projekt Red appears to have carried lessons learned from that process into its handling of "The Witcher 4" as well, with developers publicly emphasizing solid performance for that upcoming title too.

What to Expect on Handheld Consoles

For anyone currently running "The Witcher 3" on Steam Deck ahead of the remaster's release, official guidance from CD Projekt Red recommends launching the game in DirectX 11 if startup crashes occur. This is because the game's heavier ray tracing and FSR profiles are built for considerably stronger PC hardware than what the handheld offers.

A locked 30 FPS cap paired with native resolution and ray tracing disabled tends to offer the most stable experience. If needed, shadows, foliage, screen space reflections, and background character density serve as the easiest settings to scale back further.

CD Projekt Red is releasing "The Witcher 3" Remastered this September 29, with the update going ahead of the "Songs of the Past" expansion's release.

Given the developer's direct comments on Steam Deck performance and its track record of optimizing the original release for handheld hardware, players heading into the Remastered version can reasonably expect a smoother launch than some of CD Projekt Red's past releases.
