The wild-looking burgers a group of Swansea friends are making in the city

A group of childhood friends have created what are probably the wildest-looking burgers in Swansea with bold coloured buns and mouth watering ingredients.

'Madbuns' opened in September last year after the self confessed "foodies" spotted a potential gap in the market.

Based in St Helen's Road, the team have all grown up within the area and have created their own take on American-style smash burgers, with a twist.

Mahdi Uddin, Riyaad Islam and Shah Rahman got the idea for Madbuns after they were looking for somewhere to eat in Swansea and felt they'd have to look outside of the city to find the kind of food they wanted.

They wanted to create something new, with locally-sourced ingredients everyday from nearby trade and businesses.

Joined by two additional childhood friends; a talented Welsh chef who had been reinventing the traditional Indian takeaway and another partner, Madbuns was created.

The pandemic meant the venture was heavily delayed for two years before the team "decided to take a risk" and set up shop in St Helen's Road.

Their offering boasts eye-catching coloured and flavoured burger buns with bright mocktails to soothe every taste bud.

"We want to change the vibe of the street, we're all local boys and it was important to us that we produce good quality food from local trade and businesses in our home.

"We're massive foodies and we would always visit Cardiff and other places for meals and decided we wanted to offer something new and constantly experiment.

"It was a huge risk setting up during the pandemic but we had so much support from friends and family and it really speaks to this area" said 23-year-old Mahdi.

The team have aimed to create an American-styled diner centred around the "social vibe" with an emphasis on interaction between customer and staff.

"We all care about what we sell, we get fresh produce in every day and welcome anyone through our doors. We're catering to more people with a new vegan menu too. We want to offer something different and other food options that people in Swansea may not be doing," added Mahdi.

As Covid restrictions eased last week, Madbuns want to establish themselves as a "must-visit destination" for food lovers who like to chat.

"Its all about creating a sit in atmosphere now, we want to establish a bond with customers so they keep coming back to us and then we want to try new stuff that isn't seen elsewhere" he said.

Jubz Ali Mannan, another childhood friend, joined Madbuns as their head chef after boasting his own success of cooking with his unique take on Indian street food, but now he wants to take a different approach.

"We are different from other burger outlets because we're ultimately trying to cater western food towards the Asian Muslim market. We've done this by creating a decent menu of mocktails and milkshakes, because, as Muslims, we don't drink alcohol.

"We're really trying to be as accessible as possible for people with different dietary needs, we have a new menu coming with a large portion of it being vegan.

"I'm experimenting all the time and the coloured buns are really our wow factor" said the 27-year-old.

Black charcoal buns, beetroot buns and natural blue food colouring all feature on the mad menu with new additions coming next week in the form of a Ghost Chilli burger and a 'philly-cheese steak'.

"We've all come from backgrounds working with food and just decided to do our own thing and have our own space. Each member of the team has a different quality and we just came together to create Madbuns.

"We're popular with takeaways but we want to change that and create a buzz in the area, we hope people come back for their favourites but stay with us for the new stuff we want to try," he said.
