The Wheel of Time turns and keeps turning, which means it will eventually come around to "The Wheel of Time" season 3.
While Prime Video is currently full of promotional material for "The Rings of Power" season 2, we're still looking ahead at the third instalment of the streamer's other massive fantasy adaptation. The show was renewed back in summer 2022, and we've been waiting to see more of Robert Jordan's legendary fantasy saga brought to life ever since.
The Wheel of Time will continue to follow Moiraine (Rosamund Pike), an Aes Sedai sorceress, and the young villagers she found — one of whom, Rand (Josha Stradowski), has now been revealed to the world as the Dragon Reborn.
Rand and his friends have undertaken journeys that have taken them far from the Two Rivers. As of "The Wheel of Time" season 2 finale, Rand and his friends have managed to take down one of the Dark One's allies, but greater challenges (and more powerful foes) lie ahead.
While we've not had a fresh update about one of the best Prime Video fantasy shows for a while now, here's everything we do know about "The Wheel of Time" season 3 right now, including release date speculation, casting rumors and more.
'The Wheel of Time' season 3 release date speculation
The Wheel of Time season 3 is definitely in the works; Amazon confirmed as such at Comic-Con 2022. A release date has not yet been confirmed, but I'd wager that the new season won't be on our screens till 2025.
Scripts for "The Wheel of Time" season 3 had been finished before the Writers Guild of America strike in 2023. Filming began in April 2023 and in June, stars Josha Stradowski and Daniel Henney told TechRadar that "a good chunk of it is done." Production was subsequently paused for some time due to the WGA and later the Screen Actors Guild strikes.
In March 2024, Amazon dropped a short teaser revealing that filming had come to an end. While this progress report was good news, it suggested that the third season might still be a while away, given the amount of post-production work a high-stakes fantasy series like "The Wheel of Time" requires.
Our most recent hint that we won't return to Jordan's world came from a recent THR report about Rosamund Pike boarding "Now You See Me 3". Her role in the new instalment remains shrouded in mystery, but the article did end by teasing "The Wheel of Time" would launch its third season 'next year'.

The main cast of The Wheel of Time will be back for season 3, including:

It sounds like the latest season will feature a lot of new faces, too. According to a September report from WoTSeries, "The Wheel of Time" season 3 is set to feature 'more than 70 new cast members', including Scottish actor Cameron Jack (in an as-yet-unknown role).
The same outlet has also reported that Carmela Bonomi is due to appear as Jorin din Jubai, one of the very first Sea Folk that readers encounter in the original books, and they "anticipate" that Fredrik Wagner and Michael Lindall will also appear in the series, too. As and when we get any official casting info from Rafe Judkins, Amazon, or any other sources, we'll be sure to include that info here.
The Wheel of Time season 3 plot and season 2 ending explained
"The Wheel of Time" season 2 finale brought all of the main players back together in the city of Falme, the prophesied location for the Dragon Reborn to declare his return. Egwene is there, having been captured by the Seanchan, while Nynaeve and Elayne are busy trying to free her. Rand shows up to rescue Egwene, but also fights Ishamael.
Meanwhile, Perrin arrives with his Aiel companions, but they run into the Whitecloaks (who have a vendetta against him). He and Loial attempt to get the Horn of Valere to Rand, but it's Mat who ends up blowing it and calling forth the ghostly Heroes of the Horn.
A massive battle takes place involving the Seanchan, Whitecloaks, and the Heroes, all while Rand faces off against Ishamael (Fares Fares). He's on the verge of losing, but his fellow Emond's Fielders came to his aid, enabling him to kill the Forsaken. On a nearby beach, Moirane (who'd managed to reconnect to the One Power) used her magic to destroy the Seanchant fleet, then conjured a dragon made of fire to proclaim Rand as the Dragon Reborn.
"The Wheel of Time" season 3 will pick up after these events, expanding the story to even more new locations and involving even more new characters. One new, important figure is Moghedien, a Forsaken introduced at the very end of the season 2 finale. As she revealed to Lanfear, Ishamael had freed all of the remaining Forsaken.
"S3 is even more sophisticated and rich and deep than S2," showrunner Rafe Judkins teased on X (formerly Twitter).
Judkins previously confirmed that The Wheel of Time season 3 will incorporate elements of Jordan's fourth book, The Shadow Rising.
“I’m so thrilled that we’ll be making a third season of The Wheel of Time,” he said when Amazon's renewal was announced. “The Shadow Rising has always been my favorite book in the series, so being able to bring it to television and introduce new audiences to the stories that made me fall in love with these books in the first place is such an honor, and something I’ve been working toward since I first pitched the show years and years ago."
Now, for those who haven't read the books, stop reading now as we go into some spoilers for The Shadow Rising.
One of the major storylines in The Shadow Rising is Rand's journey to the Aiel's desert homeland, known as the Waste. In the season 2 finale, the fiery proclamation of Rand as the Dragon Reborn was noted with significance by Aiel warrior Aviendha and her companions. It seems the Aiel had their own prophecy of a savior, called the Car'a'carn.
The Emond's Fielders will split up again if the show follows the book closely. Rand, Moiraine, Egewene, and Mat will head off to the Aiel Waste, for various reasons we won't get into here. Meanwhile, Perrin will return to the Two Rivers while Nynaeve and Elayne hunt the Black Ajah.
And let's not forget the introduction of Moghedien (formerly Lilien Moiral), one of the Chosen who has been set up to as a dangerous villain for "The Wheel of Time" season 3. She appeared at the end of the season, where she confronted Lanfear and warned that Ishamael had known she would try to keep the other Forsaken sealed away, so freed them all before the Battle of Falme. She then warned that the fate of the ta'veren now lay in the hands of the other Forsaken, not her.
In the book, Moghedien becomes a particular enemy of Nynaeve and Elayne as they search for Liandrin and other Black Ajah members.
Teasing what's to come in May 2024, showrunner Rafe Judkins was very keen to hype up the start of the new season. Speaking with Deadline, Judkins said: "The first 15 minutes of season 3 is one of the most bonkers set pieces I've ever seen on television.
"I was just watching it this week and it is absolutely bananas what our team pulled off... just a bunch of women in their 40s and 50s shredding each other, and it is wonderful to behold."
