One of Rhondda Cynon Taf's longest-serving school crossing patrol officers will be retiring from her role this month. Christine Leach, 73, from the Pontygwaith area has dedicated 38 years to helping the pupils of Pontygwaith Primary School safely cross the road.
Christine, who attended the school herself as a child, first started the road safety role during 1984 and has for the last four decades ensured that generations of children safely walk to and from school each day. According to Christine she is looking forward to her retirement but is certain that she will miss her role.
"I think that only part of me wants to retire," she said. "But the time has come. It's an achievement to do it for so long, and I've loved it. I've seen generations of families over the years - some of the parents say to their children that 'Mrs Leach was a lollipop lady back when I was in school'."
Christine began her job at the right time. Back in 1984, she had some housing maintenance that needed to be sorted. "I do remember the first time I did the job," she explained. "Three of us applied for the role, and luckily enough I got it.
"I was having a new roof done on my house at the time, and the builders were ready to do it before I had enough money, so that's why I went for the job. I could've had a new house for the time I've been doing it!"
Christine revealed that she would be spending her free time at the allotment, as well as sewing, cake-making and helping to look after her great granddaughter. To get more stories from across Rhondda straight to your inbox, subscribe to our dedicated newsletter here.
