People in West Bridgford have been speaking of the 'weird' contrast on a street between an 'ugly looking' block of 1970s flats next to a luxury new riverside development.
Dozens of modern new flats are being built in Wilford Lane on a cleared site once home to the Trentside Social Club. The development of 34 apartments is known as Riverside.
The site in question is located next to the tall, post-war Rivermead blocks of flats, thought to have been built between the 1960s and 1970s.
People in the area have been speaking about the contrast of the appearance of the two sites.
Property developer Lisa Bentley said the Rivermead flats were "ugly looking", and now out of keeping with the area in light of the multi-million-pound regeneration and investment.
The 55-year-old, who lives in the town, said: "I've lived here for a while and West Bridgford is becoming a more expensive area with more luxury flats.
"The Rivermead flats don't fit in anymore, sadly - the building is ugly looking and it's quite big.
"I walk past it most days with my dog and it isn't the nicest view."
Chris Harrison, manager of The Beeches hotel and Leisure Club, directly opposite the buildings, also spoke of the contrast.
He said: "The Rivermead flats were a 70s build, the older generation of people here.
"The new flats will bring in a more affluent clientele.
"It's a shame as we've lost our view with the new flats but we hope it'll bring in business."
Retired Geoff Bills, 67, who lives in West Bridgford, spoke of the 'weird' difference between Riverside and Rivermead.
"The flats will be so new and so luxurious and right next to Rivermead, it'll be quite weird," he said.
"I guess it's like other areas across England, you get all different types of housing.
"I don't mind the Rivermead flats, they've been here since I have."
Planning permission for the redevelopment of the Trentside Social Club site was given the go-ahead back in 2018.
The building was previously used as British Rail's social club and Labour meetings used to be held there.
The flats at the site are being built by Chilwell-based housing developer Peter James Homes.
The new flats are expected to be ready in the summer, and a show home is set to be created in the coming months.
Speaking previously, MaryClaire Morgan, sales manager at Peter James Homes, said: “We’ve spent a lot of time researching what is available along the River Trent and what types of accommodation people are looking for.
"The Riverside apartments will tick a lot of boxes, particularly for professionals and couples.
"As people increasingly work from home and recognise the value of creating a better work-life balance, waterside living has become a highly desirable aspiration."
Estate agents FHP have been marketing the new flats.
The Riverside development adds to the multi-million-pound regeneration of Nottingham's waterside which has seen several luxury apartment blocks built in recent years.
Other nearby developments include the £30m Trent Bridge Quays, where up to 95 townhouses and apartments will be built between the Notts County's Meadow Lane stadium and the City Ground home of Nottingham Forest.
The former Rushcliffe Borough Council Civic Centre on Trent Bridge has also been redeveloped into more than 100 luxury flats.
