The water leak that's taken 18 months to be fixed in Llanelli leaving residents slipping and sliding on ice

Water has been leaking on a Llanelli street for 18 months, claim residents, leaving people slipping on icy pavements. Llanelli councillor Terry Davies said water was constantly flowing down from Bigyn Road to Tyisha Road.

He claimed he'd been in contact with Welsh Water throughout the year and a half it had been a problem to ask it to rectify the issue, accusing the company of 'ignoring' complaints which had been put forward.

He said contractors had visited the area three times, yet "left the job unfinished", with water still flowing out to the drains and onto land in the area. Get stories like this straight to your inbox with our newsletters.

Llanelli councillor Terry Davies said: "I have been trying to get a water leak repaired with Welsh Water for over 18 months now. The water leak has caused neighbours to slip on ice during the last freeze, and mud and water to flow down from Bigyn Road to Tyisha Road in Llanelli and clog up the drainage systems.

"The county council highways as well as the Tyisha transforming team have reported this leak on several occasions. The county highways have been out to assist on several occasions to clean up as well as to put down salt to help during the frost, but Welsh Water has ignored the communication and complaints." Mr Davies claimed the issue was resulting in the loss of thousands of gallons of water, and that Welsh Water did not do enough in protecting its own network, "costing us, the consumer, millions by adding the cost to water rates. Contractors at cost have been out three times only to leave the job unfinished with the water still flowing to the drains and land."

A spokesman for Welsh Water said in a statement that it had carried out repairs on Tuesday, March 7, and apologised for the delay in rectifying the issue. A statement read: “We have had a team onsite today (March 7) to carry out the necessary repair to the leak and this has now been completed. We always aim to investigate and repair leaks as quickly as possible and we are sorry this has not proven to be the case on this occasion. We are investigating to understand what has caused the delay and would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused."
