The Wales v England player ratings as Gareth Bale's World Cup ends in misery after mauling

Danny Ward 5

Back in for the suspended Wayne Hennessey. Made a superb early save to deny Marcus Rashford one-on-one. Can't really be blamed for the first two goals, but probably should have kept Rashford's second out. Was always likely to be in for a busy night.

Neco Williams 5

Put his body on the line. Literally. Took a shot full in the face from Rashford, which eventually caused him to be subbed. Was largely chasing shadows. Lost Rashford a little too easily for that early chance, with Ward coming to the rescue. Nevertheless, his presence was missed when he was forced off just before half-time.

Joe Rodon 4

Gave away the free-kick for England's first, although admittedly there will be some debate on whether Phil Foden exaggerated the contact. Perhaps could have stood up to Harry Kane better to stop the cross for England's second goal.

Chris Mepham 4

Reasonably solid in the first half, but lost Foden too easily for England's second goal. No Welsh player made more tackles, but he was ultimately powerless to stop the English juggernaut in the second half. Awareness over the shoulder was poor for much of the night, mind.

Ben Davies 4

Another who struggled to deal with Foden, but would probably argue he was left too exposed by this team-mates. Stood up well in the one-on-one for much of the first half, but lost possession too easily for England's second goal after the break. An unusually, off-colour performance. Forced off with an injury.

Ethan Ampadu 4

Made a couple of really good tackles in the middle in the first half. Competitive in the air too against the likes of Harry Maguire and John Stones. But he was overrun in the second half and faded badly as England took control.

Joe Allen 5 - STAR MAN

His first start since returning from injury. Initially looked quite sharp, but gave possession away cheaply to put his side under pressure on a couple of occasions. Nearly scored an absolute worldie just before the break, but was otherwise pretty quiet as England dominated possession. Can't fault his work-rate, but just didn't really happen for him. Looked to limp off with injury.

Aaron Ramsey 4

Better tonight, but that's not really saying much. A brilliant tackle on Kane the highlight in the first half. Showed a bit more zip in the final third, particularly after the break, but couldn't quite slice open the England defence, although opportunities to shine were largely at a premium all night. Faded further as Wales found themselves on the back foot.

Gareth Bale (C) 2

Anonymous again. A really, really sad end to a desperately poor World Cup from a man who has given his all for his country. Considering everything he's done, it shouldn't have ended like this. Touched the ball seven times and completed one pass in that first half. Hooked at half-time, Rob Page said he was struggling with a hamstring injury.

Kieffer Moore 3

Simply needed to hold the ball up better in the first half. Some poor touches quickly extinguished any small signs of attacking intent, but his aerial presence clearly helped Wales defensively in the set-piece. Nearly pulled one back with a deflected drive from distance, but otherwise pretty quiet.

Daniel James 4

Returning to the side after starting the defeat to Iran from the bench. Some promising moments, but didn't really get a chance to take full flight and trouble England with his pace. Did manage to flash an effort just wide of the post when the game was already gone, but otherwise didn't offer enough. Subbed.

Subs

Connor Roberts (on for N.Williams 35) - Gave Rashford far, far too much space for England's second of the night - 3

Brennan Johnson (on for Bale 45) - Some promising flashes, but aside from a couple of blocked shots, couldn't really make anything happen - 4

Joe Morrell (on for B. Davies) - Was brought on out of necessity more than anything else, and game was already gone. Little impact - 3

Harry Wilson (on for James 77) - Sent a freekick into the wall, but otherwise a pretty quiet cameo - 4

Rubin Colwill (on for Allen 80) - As above really. Snapped a shot over the bar late on - 4
