London: The U.S. "desperately" needs more aluminium, President Donald Trump told a virtual rally for Mike Mazzei, who has just won the Republican nomination for governor of Oklahoma. The state is home to a massive new smelter project, a joint venture between U.S. producer Century Aluminum and Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA).
The project is backed by $500 million in federal funds and is exactly the sort of headline-grabbing investment Trump was hoping for when he hiked aluminium import tariffs to 50% in June last year.
