A much-anticipated new Swansea attraction has advertised vacancies for people to go and work there when it officially opens. Penderyn Whisky will open a brand new distillery at the old Hafod-Morfa Copperworks site, which dates back to 1809 and comprises 12.5 acres on the west bank of the Tawe. Copper ore from as far afield as North America, Cuba, Australia and South America was once smelted at the site.
The popular brand plans to open its 'Penderyn Experience' whisky tour on the historic site to educate visitors about distilling and the site’s history. It will also include a visitor centre with shop, tasting bar, exhibition space and toilets, along with the creation of a distillery, offices and VIP bar in the fully refurbished grade two-listed powerhouse building.
Other features will see a new barrel store in part of the grade two listed rolling mill and a new-build covered walkway connecting the refurbished powerhouse. It is hoped the transformation could attract more than 50,000 people a year. Get Swansea stories straight to your inbox with our newsletter.

Now, ahead of it welcoming its first guests, it is looking to fill vacancies for distillery operators and visitor guides. The closing date for applications is on April 17. An advertisement on its website for the Distillery Operator roles read: "We are looking for a focused, reliable and flexible person to join our distillery operations team, working in all areas of distillery production, including mashing, distillation, bulk spirit collection, raw materials intake and dispatch.
"It’s essential that you’re a great team player, but also able to work independently. The ability to work calmly in a busy, dynamic and demanding environment is crucial, as is your ability to follow procedures and work accurately. The right candidate will have a strong understanding of the importance of health & safety in the workplace. Full training will be provided, and a competitive salary."
And the job description for the Visitor Guide roles read: "Ideally you will have the following skills: outgoing personality with retail customer service experience; computer literacy and a good telephone manner; flexibility with working hours (rota and sickness / holiday cover etc); Welsh/French/German speakers desirable but not essential. Full and part-time positions available. Full training will be provided, and a competitive salary."
Swansea Council secured a £3.75m National Lottery Heritage Fund grant for the expansive Hafod-Morfa site’s transformation work, with additional works to other historical buildings in the vicinity funded by the Welsh Government Transforming Towns funding.
