Every fashion season brings new fashion trends to go with it. Some are blatant. Like Miu Miu's no pants phenomenon or the sheer dress craze that still sweeps red carpets. Others are far subtler. Often declared microtrends, they're not as in your face as their more attention-seeking siblings. In fact, unless you're actively stalking every single runway show and lookbook or style-based blogs, you may never even know they exist. Unless they get promoted to a full-fledged obsession. So you may not be aware that bubble hems are on the cusp of notoriety.
They're nothing new as designers have been rounding out the hems of dresses and skirts for some time. But it's definitely picking up steam as even the fast-fashion players are getting in on the action. Perhaps no one is a better spokesperson than Jonathan Simkhai of SIMKHAI. The label offers numerous bubble-hem pieces, including a couple of summer-ready dresses. Helmut Lang, Carolina Herrera and Alaïa are also embracing the controversial silhouette.
