As if The Traitors Australia couldn’t get any spookier than a bunch of reality stars plotting to murder one another, it turns out the actual filming experience was even wilder than what’s shown on TV thanks to one unseen detail.
Claudia Bonifazio has revealed that the infamous Round Tables were not only “scary” because everyone was in the hot seat, but because a song played each night before the cameras started filming.
“They put you in the mood with a song — The Hunger Games song, ‘The Hanging Tree’,” she told PEDESTRIAN.TV.
“So you’re like, wow, this is real. We’re about to play Hunger Games. It’s crazy. It’s intense. You think you’re in a board game.”
What is The Hanging Tree?
For those not familiar with The Hunger Games, “The Hanging Tree” is a folk ballad performed by Jennifer Lawrence in the third film, Mockingjay – Part 1, and again used in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
It’s a haunting track which sounds like a childhood nursery rhyme, but has dark lyrics about a man telling his lover to meet him in death at the execution tree.
The song’s inclusion in the production of The Traitors isn’t unique to the Australian format, as it’s also played before every Round Table on both the UK and US versions.
British contestant Wilfred ‘Wilf’ Webster previously told The Mirror that contestants would listen to the song before the show’s host, Claudia Winkleman, entered the room and the arguments began.
“They play a song when you go in there, and it’s really sinister. You sit there for the song before Claudia even comes in, so everyone is just looking at each other,” he said.
Claudia Bonifazio spills on the ‘haunted’ manor
In addition to the music, Claudia told P.TV that she felt like Castle Claremont, where they filmed in New Zealand, was “haunted” — especially because its address is on Mount Horrible Road.
“The manor was so f**king scary. It was so scary, and also freezing. It was like 100,000 years old, so there’s no heating in there, so we’re freezing the whole time, which I don’t think you guys know,” she detailed.
“It’s snowing outside, we’ve got these little tank tops on like, ‘We just want to look good!’, but it was so scary in there.”
Maybe the fear of the actual filming experience explains the poor choices being made by the Faithfuls to eliminate their own instead of the Traitors. There are only four episodes left, so stay tuned to see who makes it to the end and who gets murdered before the finish line.
The Traitors Australia airs Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7:30pm on 10.
