Step aside, Han Solo: the new trailer for Andor is here, and it looks set to deliver a fresh dose of rogue-ish action to the Star Wars universe.
Unlike the main Star Wars films, which depict the lives of the heroic resistance – or the fall from grace of Anakin Skywalker – the new Disney+ series seems to focus, like Rogue One, on the lives of the people affected by and living under the Empire.
The start of the trailer shows a man striking a bell in a tower and people scrambling to hide their weapons as Imperial ships fly overhead.
The focus of the show will very likely be on the struggles that kickstart the Rebellion – and the ordinary people who helped it happen.
Set five years before the events of Rogue One, which saw the death of the unit’s leader Cassian Andor, played by the Mexican actor Diego Luna using his native accent (a departure for the franchise), the series will see Luna reprise his role alongside an international cast of newcomers to the Star Wars universe, Brit Fiona Shaw, Swede Stellan Skarsgård and the Puerto Rican actress Adria Arjona.
Even more excitingly, Genevieve O’Reilly will be returning to the role of Mon Mothma, the human female politician who eventually becomes the first Chief of State of the New Republic, after the Empire is defeated, which she played in both Rogue One and Revenge of the Sith.
“They’re so proud of themselves,” Garcia says in the trailer. “So fat and satisfied. They’re everywhere.”
“People are standing up,” Fiona Shaw’s character comments, towards the end. “That’s what a reckoning sounds like.”
The show’s official synopsis describes the show as “a tense nail-biting spy thriller” and promises the return of “rebel spy Cassian Andor”. Created by Tony Gilroy, the show is set to arrive on Disney+ in 2022.
The Andor trailer marks a busy week for the Star Wars Universe, as the Star Wars Celebration is currently taking place in Anaheim, California. Among the stars to take to the stage was Luna, who told the crowd that making the show felt “amazing”.
“When I was doing the film [Rogue One], I was living every day as if it was the last, I didn’t know it was possible,” he explained.
“Everything feels different because it’s been a long time… the beauty of this show is that there is no way they’ll kill me.”
