The cost of living crisis across the country is getting worse and it won’t improve any time soon thanks to this out of touch and incompetent Conservative Government led by an absent Boris Johnson.
Gordon Brown is right to call for Cobra to be in permanent session to deal with the crisis. While he and the SNP’s leader in Westminster, Ian Blackford, are both spot-on in wanting to see Parliament recalled over the current situation.
The former prime minister never shies away from the big issues. And he is correct once again over his criticism of Johnson and Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi, who decided to go on their summer holidays during a cost of living crisis.
Labour and the SNP disagree on many issues but it is good to see them both calling out this shambolic government and the two contenders for its leadership, Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak, for their lack of ideas in trying to help the hardest hit in society.
The bleak forecast from the Bank of England of recession has put even more black clouds over the economy. In times of crisis there needs to be a coming together of the best brains in how to deal with it.
What we have unfortunately is a Tory Party too busy fighting with itself and a Prime Minister and Chancellor sunning themselves on holiday while the sensible heads shout from the sidelines, unable to do anything to help those who are most in need.
The Tories just don’t care and have let down the country when they really needed to be at the top of their game.
Missed the bus
Free bus travel for Scots under the age of 22 is a great policy and many are already benefiting from having the pass. It gives our young people more freedom to explore our great country.
However Scottish Labour is right to criticise the Scottish Government for the slow uptake. Those eligible have to apply to get the pass and instead of being an easy task for this tech-savvy generation, it is proving full of hurdles.
Concerns were raised back in January when the pass was initially rolled out with calls for the pass to be simplified. We are only now seeing the results of that.
It is about time that the government sorted this problem to help our young people get the most out of what they are entitled to. A streamlined approach is needed not only to benefit our children but our environment as well.
