The top ten cars most likely to fail an MOT test according to Go Compare data

As the cost of living crisis continues to batter the wallets of UK residents, more and more people are looking for ways to save money as and where they can - whether that be cutting down on subscriptions, using less energy or ridding themselves of luxuries.

However, one essential that many cannot afford to scrimp on comes in the form of motor vehicles such as cars, motorcycles and vans - which are frequently used for day to day activities such as commuting to and from work.

And while the price of petrol and diesel has dropped substantially from the fuel crisis Britons faced a few months back, there are still other outgoings such as tax and insurance that must be paid to drive legally.

One of the biggest kickers in terms of motor expenditure however, comes in the form of the annual MOT test - which motorists must ensure their vehicle has to prove that it is roadworthy. Although the maximum price set by the Government for an MOT comes to £54.85 - if a car fails this strict examination and needs repairs, the cost of reparations could easily run into the hundreds, or even thousands.

Car insurance comparison site Go Compare has recently uncovered the ten worst vehicle manufacturers for MOT pass rates - taken from a randomly split sample of the Government records on 3.6 million test results between 2021 and 2022. This is also inclusive of all MOT tests and their outcomes, including the make and model of vehicles, as well as their reasons for failure since the MOT system was nationally computerised back in 2005.

Without further ado, here are the ten worst car manufacturers for MOT pass rates:
