The three cities in Spain set to enforce new tourist number limits during summer

A total of three more Spanish holiday destinations are planning to enforce limits of how many British tourists can visit during the busy summer season.

According to the Mirror, Menorca, Majorca and Ibiza will have an "absolute ceiling" of tourists allowed, confirmed by the Balearic Islands government. To combat high tourist numbers, officials will work to encourage people to visit at different points of the year, in less saturated areas.

It has been reported by Spanish newspaper, Ultimahora.es, that visitor numbers will be reduced during the popular summer months when "the feeling of saturation has become suffocating for both residents and tourists".

This news has come as similar proposals have been announced in the last week by authorities in Lanzarote, as they also described the island as "saturated" by tourists. The Canary Island's tourism chiefs are planning to limit tourists and move away from dependency on the UK population who currently represent 50 per cent of the market.

Lanzarote wants to attract less tourists who spend more, as they put "quality before quantity". Iago Negueruela, minister of tourism for the Balearic Islands, said: “We believe that it is feasible to have more occupancy with fewer tourists.

"The number of visits reached this year is a maximum that should not be exceeded but should tend to decrease. There must be a clear trend towards the reduction of tourist places."

With the island of Lanzarote, exact details of how they will control or limit numbers are yet to be confirmed.

Tourist bed numbers in the Balearics are also likely to be cut and it has previously been suggested that lower standard hotels of one or two stars might be closed down.
