Before Houston became a destination sports town in the 1960s, there were swaths of vacant coastal prairie land owned by the Hilton Hotel Corporation. With few buildings around, one could just make out the wooden derricks over at the Pierce Junction oil field. White-tailed deer and coyotes roamed the place alongside vicious mosquitoes.
