The swish Edinburgh bar named South-East Scotland Pub & Bar of the Year 2023

An Edinburgh bar has just been named the South East Scotland Pub and Bar of the Year at a prestigious UK-wide awards.

The team behind the Scran & Scallie were left celebrating after the National Pub & Bar Awards and has been recognised as South-East Scotland Pub & Bar of the Year 2023.

The popular gastropub, which is found in Stockbridge, celebrates 10 years on the city’s culinary scene this year. Having opened in 2013 by chef Tom and Michaela Kitchin.

The independent, family-run gastropub was recognised for its sustainability and design, its approach to team training, and its commitment to a seasonal menu showcasing Scottish food (or “scran”) using only the best produce from Scottish suppliers.

The Scran & Scallie has become renowned for its signature Fish Pie (Marc Millar/Scran & Scallie)

Speaking about the award, The Scran & Scallie chef owner Tom Kitchin said: “We’re truly proud of what we’ve created at The Scran & Scallie. What a fun 10 years it has been. We have been on an incredible journey and are so thankful to our community – our talented team, some of whom have been with the business since day one, our wonderful loyal guests and friends of the pub, and indeed our unbelievable suppliers who bring us incredible, fresh Scottish produce every day.’

“It’s an honour that after 10 years, The Scran & Scallie is still celebrated as one of the best pubs in the country. We are truly grateful to the Pub and Bar Awards team for the support and recognition.”

"The establishment is family-friendly and dog friendly, with it not only attracting the local community but diners from across the globe, all looking for “honest Scottish cooking served in a truly relaxed setting.”

When they first opened in 2013, owners Tom and Michaela Kitchin along with executive chef Dominic Jack visited the National Library of Scotland to search through an incredible archive of historic recipes from the mid-nineteenth century.

Many of these recipes inspired dishes on the menu today with Chefs Tom and Dominic giving a modern and creative twist.

The capital bar was among the winners at this year's National Pub & Bar awards which saw 15 regional winners crowned before announcing the National winner, which this year was awarded to The Running Horses in Mickleham.
