The Supreme Court just blocked an Alabama execution. The method causes ‘severe pain over and above death itself’

The Supreme Court just stepped in to block Alabama from moving forward with an execution using nitrogen hypoxia, which is a big win for the ongoing legal battles surrounding Death Penalty protocols. According to CNN, the court’s intervention prevents the state from using this relatively new method on Jeffery Lee, who was convicted of capital murder in connection with a 1998 pawnshop robbery in Orrville, Alabama.

It’s worth noting that the Supreme Court often handles these emergency death penalty appeals without providing a full explanation for its reasoning. In this instance, the majority did not detail why they chose to block the execution. However, CNN reported that three conservative justices, Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch, would have allowed the execution to proceed, though they also didn’t provide their specific reasoning for that stance.
