It may be the middle of winter but it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the great outdoors, especially on the rare occasion we do get a bright, sunny day. Not to mention the fact that getting outside for a stroll is a great way to boost your mood and blow away those January blues.
Here in Greater Manchester we’ve got more than our fair share of amazing walks you can do, and one in particular has a lot to offer. Located on the edge of the Peak District in Oldham is Dovestone Reservoir, a tranquil body of water surrounded by sloping moorland where you’ll find dozens of trails to follow.
The reservoir is joined by two smaller ones in the valley, Yeoman Hay and Greenfield, although Dovestone is the largest and most impressive. Usually you can follow a circular walk around Dovestone, however improvement works are currently underway during the winter, but you can still walk along sections of the reservoir edge.

The path is smooth and flat making it perfect for the whole family and you can enjoy views over the water and across to the moorland. For those who are more adventurous, there’s even more to discover in this gorgeous corner of Greater Manchester.
Overlooking the reservoir is Dovestones Edge, a gritstone cliff which offers panoramic views from the top. It’s also a popular spot with climbers, especially in the summer.
Head further north up above Greenfield reservoir and you'll find one of the most iconic features in the area, The Trinnacle. This spectacular sight is made up of several gritstone pillars which jut out from the landscape, creating a very Instagram-worthy scene.
If heights are not your thing, you can easily extend your Dovestone walk by visiting the other reservoirs. Keep your eyes peeled for a waterfall at the far end of Greenfield Reservoir.
Of course there’s no better way to end a winter walk than with a visit to a cosy pub for a hearty meal. Only a mile away from the reservoir in the village of Greenfield is The Clarence pub.
It’s dog-friendly and has an extensive menu with homemade dishes using seasonal and fresh ingredients from local suppliers. You can choose from a range of lighter bites and sandwiches to pub classics such as fish and chips and cheese and onion pie.
If you're visiting Dovestones by car then there's a pay and display carpark near to the Dovestone Sailing Club, postcode OL3 7NE. Please be considerate of local residents when visiting and refrain from parking in residential areas.
