We’re lucky in Greater Manchester to have the Peak District right on our doorstep. It’s a beautiful part of the country where you can immerse yourself in nature and escape the hustle and bustle of city life.
There’s an endless supply of places to visit within this national park, and you could spend days exploring this beautiful landscape. But you don’t have to travel far from Manchester to enjoy what the Peaks has to offer.
Located in the northern end of the Peak District and only 30 minutes drive from Oldham is Wessenden Valley. Surrounded by rugged moorland, the valley is the ideal setting for an autumnal walk - and hidden in the landscape are some stunning waterfalls.

The valley, nestled in the Dark Peak, features four reservoirs: Wessenden Head, Wessenden, Blakeley and Butterley. They each offer breathtaking views, with Butterley being the largest.
There are several waterfalls which you can see by picking up the Pennine Way, which runs through the valley. Tucked beside Wessenden Reservoir is Wessenden Head Waterfall, which can be reached by a faint path. This waterfall is most impressive after heavy rainfall, when the water cascades down and cuts through the hillside.
A second, smaller waterfall can be spotted near the bridge which crosses Wessenden Brook which flows from Blakeley Reservoir to Wessenden. At the top of the reservoir is another impressive waterfall and a weir.
You can pick up the Pennine Way from Wessenden Head Road Car Park, HD9 4EU, which is free to use. From here it’s a two mile walk to Wessenden Reservoir.
