Chelsea's decision to bring their substitute goalkeeper on against Liverpool is not the first time the west Londoners have done such a thing in the Carabao Cup final.
Edouard Mendy, who was exceptional in between the posts to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool for the best part of 120 minutes at Wembley, was taken off with Kepa brought on following his performances in recent shootouts.
However, the Spaniard skied the decisive spot-kick as Liverpool won 11-10 in a dramatic match in the capital.
It's cruel for Kepa, who was in tears after the match on the pitch and when collecting his runners-up medal.
The decision Thomas Tuchel took to bring Kepa on for Chelsea with penalties on the horizon is nothing new in football and indeed with the Blues.
Former manager Maurizio Sarri tried telling Kepa to come off in their 2019 League Cup final with Manchester City, but the Spaniard was shaking his head and refused to leave the pitch.
Giving his account on what happened back in 2019, the Chelsea goalkeeper said: "I am not proud about what happened. I lived through a storm that weekend.
“This is a situation that I never felt. He thought I was injured, everything went faster [than expected] and happened as it happened.
“I said sorry to everyone and Sarri explained to me how he felt after this, but we were in the spotlight this week.
“Internally, everything was solved and finished the day after Carabao Cup.
“From now I will ask the manager [questions] just in the half-time of the extra-time!”
Meanwhile, Sarri said the incident was a "misunderstanding": "I misunderstood the problem and only realised the situation when the doctor arrived at the bench.
"He understood I asked for a change for his physical problem. He said: 'I haven't a physical problem.' And he was right."
