The Steven Gerrard Rangers theory that Gio van Bronckhorst proved wrong as Aston Villa boss ripped for leaving Ibrox

When Steven Gerrard left Rangers it appeared as if it would be a massive blow for the club.

The Englishman opted to trade the Scottish Premiership for the English Premier League as he stepped into the hot seat at Aston Villa.

The English top flight is often viewed as the promised land for both players and managers, so it was little surprise to see Gerrard eventually leave Scotland to move south of the border.

But with Rangers flying high after reaching the Europa League Final and Villa languishing in mid-table, the move has come under scrutiny.

Some fans have taken to social media to question the move of the title-winning boss, with Gio van Bronckhorst leading the club to Seville while Gerrard gears up for a game with Burnley.

Into the bargain, Van Bronckhorst has managed to disprove a theory from Gerrard following their Champions League exit at the hands of Malmo.

Gerrard led the side to back-to-back runs to the last 16 in the Europa League, but following defeat to the Swedes at Ibrox declared the club could go no further without an influx of cash.

The Liverpool legend said: "To compete with the teams we're playing against, we have to spend big money.

Gio van Bronckhorst celebrates (SNS Group)

"In the last two transfer windows we haven't spent a penny.

"There has to be some realism there, we can't compete against these teams on their own patch without spending.

"There has to be some common sense when you're judging us from the outside."

Since then, Van Bronckhorst has masterminded wins over Borussia Dortmund, Red Star Belgrade, Braga and RB Leipzig to reach the Europa League final.

That is with right-back Mateusz Żukowski being the only transfer fee paid out during the Dutchman's tenure so far - who isn't even in the European squad.

Aaron Ramsey and Amad Diallo have both come in on loan, but have only played small parts in the European campaigns since their moves from Juventus and Manchester United.
