'The start of a Golden Age' - Wooler named one of the best places to live thanks to new museum and distillery

The co-founder of one of Northumberland's biggest ever tourism investments has hailed a "new golden age" for her hometown after it was named one of the best places to live in the UK.

Wooler was one of three areas of the North East named on The Times' Best Places to Live 2023 list. And the main reason for Wooler's inclusion on the index was brand new visitor experience and whisky distillery, Ad Gefrin.

The release of the list coincides with the opening of the £16m attraction this weekend, with the first visitors set to walk through its doors on Saturday. However, it was not just the museum and distillery which the judges liked in Wooler, also citing the friendly artistic community who call the town home.

Eileen Ferguson, co-founder of Ad Gefrin, said: "This is such exciting news. Of course, we have always known what a wonderful community Wooler is to be part of.

"Local people have supported us from the beginning, and we hope that Ad Gefrin will continue to be embraced by locals and visitors alike. We truly believe this is the start of a new golden age for Wooler and North Northumberland."

Wooler was named as one of the best places to live in Northern England alongside Whitley Bay and Ouseburn, with judges dubbing the small town on the edge of Northumberland National Park the "ultimate post-pandemic dream." Last year's two entries, Morpeth and Tynemouth, dropped off the revered annual list.

The Times wrote: "The new Ad Gefrin Anglo Saxon Museum is putting a spring in the step of this vibrant town, which is already home to a friendly, artistic community. For many, life here is the ultimate post-pandemic dream: living in the middle of nowhere but still being able to pop out to buy artisan cheese or attend a poetry reading."
