The official grand opening of The Standard’s Asia flagship in Bangkok took place on Dec 14, with performances by mostly noted DJs, across four floors of The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon. Stephane Vacher, The Standard’s Executive Vice President of the Nightlife and Entertainment Department, was tasked with curating the night’s music programming.
Lewis Tan, Douglas Little, Jodi O'Keefe, Fiona Xie, Voramas Srivaddhanaprabha, Ravi Itiravivong, Prom and Chollada Sirisant, Paulie Sirisant, Kanachai Bencharongkul, Prinya Ruenprapan, Chonlathorn Kongyingyong, Sarin Ronnakiat, Ploi Horwang and Chayanit Chansangavej are among the guests of the Standard global family, attending the night in retrofuturistic outfits.
DJ Stretch Armstrong, one of the emerging players on New York’s underground radio scene, and American DJ and spoken word artist Rich Medina pleased the crowds with 90s hip hop at The Parlor. Tea room Tease provided a whimsical experience with its black-and-white interior which was complemented by a moving art installation centred on retrofuturism on display. On the terrace of The Grill Standard, American burlesque dancer Dita Von Teese unleashed her inner goddess, performing a sensual striptease with her signature giant martini glass.
The sixth floor provided a chillaxing vibe as the crowd mingled poolside while enjoying the breeze. What piqued our curiosity when we first arrived on this floor were models working out inside the hotel's fully-equipped gym. A stage was set by the pool, where Onyx Collective, a new-blood modern jazz band, presented their interpretation of 'avant-garde jazz'. Words like 'classy' or 'original' do not apply here at all. Their live performance of a fusion of jazz, hip hop and R&B, was nothing but new and intriguing. Leading up to and immediately following Onyx Collective was talented DJ duo, Musclecars.
As the night drew to an end, the crowd headed on the same course for The Club. The third-floor event space was turned into a nightclub for one night only. Warming up the crowd with club mixes is Paris-born, Tokyo-raised, Berlin-based French DJ Alex from Tokyo before American DJ and music producer Diplo culminated the night with an electrifying set.
