The six Coronation ‘demands’ by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle - from balcony position to Archie problems

The jury is still well and truly out on whether or not Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be at King Charles' Coronation on May 6.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have already confirmed that they have been invited to be part of the 2,000-strong Westminster Abbey congregation, but they haven't given anything else away.

It's now been reported Harry and Meghan are locked in tense talks with the royals over 'demands' and conditions on their attendance.

The Royal Family are "fully expecting" them to attend but it's not known if they will actually be there due to tensions within the royal family being at an all time high, as writes the Mirror.

After the release of Harry's memoir Spare earlier this year, in which he detailed some shocking allegations about his relatives, it's reported that it's left a strain on some of their relationships.

Prince Harry could return to the UK for the coronation alone as Meghan isn't "brave or strong enough to be there", according to one palace insider.

Former royal butler Paul Burrell claims that the King has kept the moral high ground by inviting Harry and Meghan after their revelations in recent months. The 64-year-old added that it will be "incredibly uncomfortable" for them to reunite with the Firm at the Coronation in May - if they decide to go.

Harry and Meghan could stay at home in California with kids Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet because of issues raised after the release of Spare, and the fact that the event falls on Archie's birthday.

It's rumoured that the Sussex's eldest and sister Princess Lilibet haven't been invited, which has led to some of the more reasonable sounding demands.

Birthday crossover

The coronation coincides with another big event for the Sussexes - Prince Archie’s fourth birthday.

It’s believed that the pair want to mark both, and their ideal situation would see their son’s own milestone recognised at his great grandfather’s.

"Archie's birthday falls on May 6th, coronation day and the Sussexes want the family to recognise that," a source told OK! .

"The Sussexes have asked for some kind of celebration or acknowledgement to be factored into the day's plans to ensure that his fourth birthday won’t get lost during the momentous day."

The Mirror reports there are also fears that Meghan and Harry may upstage Charles by posting messages about their son before the Coronation takes place.

Archie and Lilibet's roles

It’s believed that Archie and Lilibet haven’t been invited because of their age, but Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will.

An insider told OK! that one of the issues between the couple and palace officials is how the Sussex children Archie, three, and one-year-old Lilibet will be included on the day but the source added their inclusion in the ceremony has "never been a bone of contention" because small children don’t attend royal events of this scale "due to restlessness and tantrums".

According to royal historian and author Dr Tessa Dunlop, it would be "odd" if Archie has not been invited to the event.

She told True Royalty TV's The Royal Beat: ""If you look at the footage of the 1953 Coronation, who was very prominent, albeit briefly? Prince Charles. He was four.

"Archie on his fourth birthday is definitely not too young to attend the coronation. And if you want Meghan there, you need to invite her son."

Balcony position

A position on the famous Buckingham Palace balcony is about as high profile as you can get at an official royal event, and it would always have been a given that Harry would take pride of place there when his grandmother, the late Queen was still alive.

Seating arrangements at family shindigs can always be a bit of a testing issue but when it comes to the royals, it can be even more competitive when you know millions are watching you from across the globe.

When the country celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the Sussexes were not on the balcony and neither were their children, but the now Prince and Princess of Wales were.

According to a source, the pair are requesting they are included on the balcony procession so they can wave along to the crowds with their relatives - however reports suggest this will not happen and they will be banned along with Prince Andrew.

The insider said: "Once the King has been crowned, there will be a Coronation procession that will start at Westminster Abbey and end at Buckingham Palace. Once the procession reaches the Palace, the King will take to the balcony and wave at the crowds with the rest of the royal family members and their children.

"This is where Harry and Meghan have requested inclusion."

Security

The security issue has been played out quite a bit in front of the general public as Harry has repeatedly demanded armed police protection for the times he and his family visit Britain.

A High Court case is due to take place in April after Harry launched legal action against the Home Office because of their failure to provide him with security, but it’s not known if a ruling will take place before the coronation on May 6. Concerns have been further raised after Harry’s revelations in his memoir Spare that he killed a number of Taliban fighters while on duty in Afghanistan.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the MailOnline: "Harry's concerns over security, which will not be helped by his revelations about the number of Taliban insurgents he personally killed, may also be a factor as he has a case pending against the Home Office on this issue."

Frogmore Cottage

In March, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed they have been evicted from Frogmore Cottage by King Charles .

The late Queen gifted Frogmore Cottage to Harry and Meghan in the months after their wedding back in 2018. A spokesperson for the Sussexes said: “We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage."

But according to the Daily Mail, Harry and Meghan have been told the property will be available for them to stay if they decide to attend the coronation.

When Harry and Meghan left the U.K, they retained a long-term lease on Frogmore, and lent it to Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank, who have now taken over the property full time.

It's believed they want to stay there with Harry’s cousin and her family, with whom the prince is close to, which will give their kids the opportunity to spend time with daughter August, who is a similar age to Lilibet.

Face-to-face summit

The Mirror reports that Harry will only attend if he “gets a face-to-face” summit with his dad and brother to discuss their issues.

An insider told The Mirror: "Harry has been very clear and his position hasn't wavered – he isn't going to come if he feels the atmosphere will be as toxic as it was during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and funeral.

"He's said he wants to reconcile with his family and it’s their call, but so far nothing has changed."

Harry was asked by ITV’s Tom Bradby earlier this month if he would attend, his reply was: "There's a lot that can happen between now and then.

"But, you know, the door is always open. The ball is in their court.

"There's a lot to be discussed and I really hope that they can - that they are willing to sit down and talk about it, because there's a lot that's happened in six years. And prior to that as well."
