The Simpsons to parody Japanese anime Death Note in new Halloween special

A new episode of The Simpsons will see the family transform into anime-style characters in a parody of a Japanese series. The upcoming Treehouse of Horror XXXIII – the latest in a series of Simpsons Halloween specials – will include a spoof of Death Note, a Japanese anime show based on the manga series of the same name.

The annual Treehouse of Horror episodes – the first of which aired in 1990 – consist of several short stories parodying famous science-fiction, horror and fantasy stories from popular culture. Previous episodes have spoofed The Twilight Zone, Stephen King’s The Shining and 90’s slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer.

The trailer for the latest episode sees Springfield’s famous family turn into human versions of themselves in the style of Japanese anime. In it, Lisa dons the role of protagonist Light Yagami, a teen genius who finds a mysterious notebook known as the Death Note.

The booked belonged to the supernatural spirit Ryuk – played by Bart in the episode – and grants the user the ability to kill anyone whose name is written in its pages. The episode is animated by Korean studio DR movie, who also worked on the original Death Note series.

Other segments in the episode will spoof HBO’s Westworld and the 2014 horror film The Babadook. The long-running animated sitcom – which is currently on its 34th season – also aired a special full-length Halloween special earlier this month.

Titled Not It – a parody of Stephen King’s iconic novel It – the episode sees Homer face off against Krusty the Clown as the villainous clown Pennywise. The Simpsons is available to stream in the UK on Disney+.
