The shock absence from England’s World Cup squad for first time in 40 years

  • England manager Thomas Tuchel named his 26-man World Cup squad on Friday morning ahead of this summer’s tournament .
  • There were a number of high-profile omissions, including Harry Maguire , Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden.
  • It was also notable that no Liverpool players made the cut - the first time this has happened for an England World Cup squad since 1986.
  • It is a shock to see no Liverpool players in the squad for the first time in 40 years, but Tuchel’s decision comes following a difficult season for the Reds.
  • Arne Slot’s team head into the final game of the season on Sunday with Champions League qualification still not secured, and Tuchel has opted to overlook the likes of Curtis Jones, Joe Gomez and teenage star Rio Ngumoha when naming his World Cup squad.
